Moredon Farm, Taunton

Residential

We were successful in obtaining Class Q consent to convert several agricultural buildings into 3 No. dwellings.  However, we sought to better the scheme approved and provide our clients with their dream home overlooking their land and Somerset Levels.

The new dwelling has been configured to read as a collection of farm buildings which follows a traditional agricultural design complete with a 'round top' Dutch Barn. The design principles are based on building forms that read individually but are connected through a series of glazed links to harmonise the building as one. The forms include the barn and a series of framed gable ends that run through the building. An existing stable building is proposed to be renovated to form ancillary accommodation as part of the proposal with this connecting to the new dwelling.

As you approach the building from the south, you are met with the ‘round top’ Dutch Barn which leads to a modern single-storey barn and the stables building beyond. The entrance is setback centrally within the main gable form. A series of timber louvres running along the upper part of the gable protect this space from the prevailing weather and creates a covered area.

The main feature of the design is the central courtyard which the buildings are framed around. Glazed corridors face this area and connect the living and sleeping areas around the property.

A material palette of corrugated metal, timber, stone, and reclaimed tiles provides a contextual relationship to the site but is used in modern arrangements to reflect the age of the property. Large window and door arrangements are used throughout the dwelling with contemporary proportions used to take advantage of natural light and the views into the gardens.
