This site was bought with the benefit of planning permission for 2 No. Barn Conversions. Having designed and renovated many barns, we at LSL Architecture understand how to apply the correct building principles to these types of properties. We applied for a change in the designs and set to work to convert and re-configure these two barns.
The design makes use of the existing openings in the building to be true to the original character of the property, adding modern windows and doors that meet the standards of current regulations. A collection of materials that includes red brickwork, timber, and tiles were selected from a reclaimed stock ensuring that the building is respectful of its historic roots while supporting the sustainable agenda through the reuse of materials.
An oak framed garage was added to the development with its design taking its cues from the existing structures, including both the form and materials. This was carefully positioned to continue the linear arrangement of buildings within the site, to provide an appearance that reads within the collection of the other buildings.
Photovoltaic panels were added to the roof which provides direct energy to the home and continues to support the green credentials of the property.
Internally spaces make use of the roof volume with exposed trusses increasing the feeling of space in the property. The central corridor is lit from above with a ridge skylight running the length of the corridor which adds to the animation of space.
