Rexton Barn, Lydeard St. Lawrence

Renovation & Conversion

This barn formed part of a 1980s planning consent whereby part of the original application had already been converted, as such the planning permission was still live and we set out to re-design and convert the Barn into our clients' home.

This former Dairy built of local red sandstone with a slate roof, formed a courtyard of barns to the former farmstead. The property frontage includes several smaller openings and houses many of the serviced areas including the kitchen and utility areas with the main living, sleeping and entertaining areas opening up onto this space while flooding these rooms with light and providing direct access into the garden.  The design makes use of the former farmyard to the rear, now a courtyard garden.

To the rear of the stone barn, there was a steel portal framed range, this element was converted into bedrooms with a glazed corridor that leads to the main bedroom with a full-height vaulted ceiling.

Upon entering the property a bespoke curved staircase sweeps up to the first floor connecting with the gallery landing that looks back onto the garden.
